David Herdeiro en/pt 2025 Jan. 23 🍎, Can We Fix This? I've used an Apple MacBook Pro M1 Max extensively over the past few years. It's a great machine, but there's something that has been bothering me.

It's the notch.

Wait. It's not the presence of a notch. I get that, I kind of like it, brings more screen space to the table (literally). It's the way the notch was designed. From the M1 to the M4, the notch is present and has the same overal design. It's a black rectangle with rounded corners. It's not bad, but it's not great either.

Take a look below:
Looks... Okay, right?

I mean, it is what it is. But now take a look at this:
Do you see the difference? It's subtle, but it's there. The notch is now a bit more rounded. Its smoother edges make it less agressive and more integrated with the screen. The roundness is not perfect, it has that iOS corner smoothing, which does help considerably.

Here's a closer look at the difference:
Here's a real life example of how it would look like: While we're at it, why not rounding the bottom of the screen as well? It would make the whole thing look more coherent and thoughful. After all, MacOS doesn't use sharp corners, why should the hardware?

To end this very polite rant, why not, once the technology allows it, a dot? Or an island? It would definitely help close the Apple ecosystem look. Maybe in a not-very-distant future...
